Do it yourself- Sweat Equity- Gardens

It is January in Maine and it is a great time to start planning for vegetable and flower gardens.

If you have already planted gardens in the past, it is time to check out the seed catalogs and order early. If you are looking to expand, it is time to order up the wood and start building that raised bed. If you are a first-time gardener, now is the time to start your research. The internet has all the information you need from planting size, when to plant, where the best location is for maximum sunlight, testing your soil, and the different varieties on what grows best in your area. You will also have to decide if you are starting from seeds or using a combination of seeds and seedlings.

You do not have to own a home to do this. You can plan it with a friend, use a co-op, or ask your landlord if you can use a part of the back yard. Many years ago, I was renting and received permission to plant a garden. I guess I really needed to work on my planning stage. I planted my cherry tomatoes too close to the lawn and my landlord mowed them down. Yup, he wiped them all out! It was early enough in the season, so I was able to replant them in raised pots. And yes, I shared them with my landlord!

A garden is a do-it-yourself project that most people can take on themselves. A well thought out designed vegetable or flower garden will add value to your home. It is also a great family project to take on with your kids, and grandkids.
